SUMMARY

The discussion centers around identifying a mysterious insect larva, approximately 7mm long, characterized by a flattened profile and a prehensile hook in its tail. Participants suggest various possibilities, including silverfish, earwigs, and hoverfly larvae, but none match the described features. The consensus leans towards the need for DNA testing to accurately identify the critter, with recommendations to consult specialized entomology forums for further assistance.

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic entomology terminology
  • Familiarity with insect larval characteristics
  • Understanding of insect classification (e.g., silverfish, earwigs)
  • Knowledge of DNA testing processes for species identification
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the characteristics of hoverfly larvae for comparison
  • Explore entomology forums such as "What's That Bug?" for expert insights
  • Learn about DNA testing methods for insect identification
  • Investigate the life cycle and behavior of earwigs and silverfish
USEFUL FOR

Entomologists, hobbyist insect collectors, and anyone interested in insect identification and classification will benefit from this discussion.

This critter (see attachment - not diagram) came to my attention by pricking me in the hand with a hook in its tail.

About 7mm long. Flattened profile. Prehensile hook in tail. Two tusk-like appendages straight out front. Very active, very supple.

Must be a larva of some sort.

Ideas?

Reminds me very much of a shrimp or of the "ear bug" from Wrath of Khan.

If it got my attention that way it would be called "dead".

sort of looks like a silverfish, but if the hook is in the tail, maybe earwig?

It used it to hang on when its legs were occupied, like a caterpillar uses its ... (Googling) ... anal prolegs.

armadillobedbug.

silverfish, earwig, armadillobedbug, Hoverfly larva

Nope, nope, nope, nope. None of these look anything like my pix.
