SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the concept of woolyphobia, a term humorously introduced in a dialogue referencing various phobias. Participants share their thoughts on the absurdity of certain phobias, such as sophophobia (fear of learning) and bogyphobia (fear of the bogeyman). The conversation highlights the irrational nature of these fears and includes a playful exchange about common phobias like arachnophobia (fear of spiders) and thalassophobia (fear of the ocean). Ultimately, the discussion underscores the peculiarities of human fears and the cultural context surrounding them.

1) its a 'phobia,' not an 'ophobia'

2) why is this weird?

My worst phobia is the fear of backing into a cold door knob. (Johnny Carson circa 1980's)

You left out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoplophobia" .

zhermes asked, "why is this weird?" I'd answer, because I for the life of me can't imagine anyone having any of these, except perhaps bogyphobia, which I think everyone had when they were a child.

Well, there is one I see quite often: Sophophobia - fear of learning. At least that's what I think I'm seeing, although it could be mere egoism masking itself as sophophobia.

They don't call it an irrational fear of X for no reason. It is weird in the sense that it is a strange phenomenon!

I didn't see everyone's favorite Arachnophobia on the list either.

Or the now popular one: lipophobia

Lucy [in her psychiatrist booth]: Are you afraid of responsibility? If you are, then you have hypengyophobia.

Charlie Brown: I don't think that's quite it.

Lucy: How about cats? If you're afraid of cats, you have ailurophobia.

Charlie Brown: Well, sort of, but I'm not sure.

Lucy: Are you afraid of staircases? If you are, then you have climacaphobia. Maybe you have thalassophobia. This is fear of the ocean, or gephyrobia, which is the fear of crossing bridges. Or maybe you have pantophobia. Do you think you have pantophobia?

Charlie Brown: What's pantophobia?

Lucy: The fear of everything.

Charlie Brown: THAT'S IT!

What about woolyphobia, i have noticed how people shy away from me.
