Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the nature of the singularity at the Big Bang and what, if anything, it "rested" on prior to the creation of space-time. Participants explore theoretical implications and the limitations of current models regarding the conditions before one Planck Time.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the singularity is a mathematical construct where current models break down, rather than a physical entity.
  • There is a claim that the Big Bang Theory does not address conditions prior to one Planck Time, focusing instead on events that occurred after.
  • One participant expresses uncertainty about how to articulate their thoughts on the topic, indicating a struggle with communication.
  • Another participant questions what the mass that initiated the Big Bang rested on if there was no fabric of space-time, highlighting a gap in understanding.
  • Some theories are mentioned, including the idea that space-time was created at the singularity, that it has always existed, or that multiple universes could be involved, but none are presented as definitively supported by evidence.
  • A participant expresses personal agnosticism regarding the theories about conditions before one Planck Time, emphasizing the lack of reliable or testable theories.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus, with multiple competing views on the nature of the singularity and the conditions preceding the Big Bang remaining unresolved.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations in the discussion regarding the assumptions made about the nature of the singularity and the definitions of space-time, as well as the unresolved status of mathematical steps leading to the current understanding.

If the Big Bang created space time, what did the singularity of the Big Bang "rest" on?

The "singularity" is just the place where out math model breaks down. It is not a physical place/thing. The Big Bang Theory is silent about what happened earlier than one Plank Time after the singularity, it just described what happened SINCE one Plank Time.

I'm sorry I worded that incorrectly.

Well, if I did not answer your question, then re-ask it with different wording.

What did the mass that made the Big Bang rest on if their wasn't the fabric of space time?

I'm sorry I have trouble expressing what's in my mind with words sometimes.

Unknown. We have no reliable/testable theory as to anything prior to one Plank Time. There are theories, including that space-time was created at the singularity, that space-time has always existed, that there are multiple universes, take your pick. Since none of them are supported by any evidence, I personally am just agnostic about the whole thing.
