What's the Optimal Shape Function for Phase Field Simulations in FEM?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on identifying the optimal shape function or element for phase field simulations within finite element methods (FEM). Participants explore various shapes and their applications in different types of simulations.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks about the best shape function or element for phase field simulation in FEM.
  • Another participant suggests that if benchmarks are unavailable, it may be beneficial to experiment with different element types and compare the results independently.
  • Several participants inquire about commonly used shapes for various types of simulations, indicating a search for established practices or insights.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion does not reach a consensus on the optimal shape function, and multiple viewpoints regarding the best approach remain. Participants express uncertainty about existing benchmarks and the effectiveness of different elements.

Contextual Notes

Participants note the potential lack of benchmarks for phase field simulations, which may influence the choice of shape functions. There is also an implied dependence on specific simulation contexts that may affect the suitability of different elements.

What have you found so far? What shapes are typically used for which types of simulations?

If you can't find any benchmarks for this type of analysis, it would be best to just try different element types and compare the results (i.e. do the benchmark yourself).
