SUMMARY

The discussion centers on sourcing components for a JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) repair project. The user, an undergraduate, is collaborating with an instrument engineer to assess potential damage to the SEM control system. They seek platforms similar to Craigslist for purchasing used scientific instruments, specifically for SEM components. Initial research on eBay yielded some second-hand parts, indicating that online marketplaces may be viable options for sourcing these specialized components.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEM) and their components
  • Familiarity with online marketplaces for scientific equipment
  • Basic knowledge of electronic component repair
  • Experience with eBay and similar auction platforms
NEXT STEPS
  • Research specialized online marketplaces for used scientific instruments
  • Explore forums dedicated to SEM repair and maintenance
  • Investigate suppliers of refurbished SEM components
  • Learn about the specific components of JEOL SEMs and their compatibility
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for undergraduate researchers, instrument engineers, and anyone involved in the repair or maintenance of Scanning Electron Microscopes, particularly those seeking cost-effective sourcing options for components.

I am working (as an undergraduate) assisting in the repair of a JEOL Scanning Electron Microscope.

Without going into too much detail, some components of the SEM control system may be damaged and need complete replacement. I am working with an instrument engineer who has mentioned that he has seen similar machines for sale, possibly even being sold for scrap.

This is mainly my project and I want to do as much of the leg work as possible, but I am unsure where to begin shopping for used Electron Microscope components. Is there something like a craigslist for expensive and specialized scientific instruments?

It's possible we'll get it working without replacing any parts, or abandon the repair altogether, but I am still curious about this question.

Any info is appreciated!

I just did a search on eBay and sorted the results by lowest price first and found some second hand parts.

I am trying to understand how transferring electric from the powerplant to my house is more effective using high voltage. The suggested explanation that the current is equal to the power supply divided by the voltage, and hence higher voltage leads to lower current and as a result to a lower power loss on the conductives is very confusing me. I know that the current is determined by the voltage and the resistance, and not by a power capability - which defines a limit to the allowable...
