Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around selecting electives for an engineering degree, specifically focusing on choices that may benefit a student leaning towards mechanical engineering but considering electrical engineering as a possibility. The scope includes academic planning and course relevance to future studies.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses uncertainty about which electives to choose, listing several options and seeking advice on their relevance to mechanical engineering.
  • Another participant asserts that most of the listed classes, except possibly digital logic, are essential for a mechanical engineering curriculum.
  • A different participant mentions having experience with the topics and indicates that programming in C will be covered later in their studies, suggesting a focus on robotics.
  • One participant recommends taking statics, highlighting its foundational importance for advanced mechanical engineering courses.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that most of the classes listed are important for mechanical engineering, but there is no consensus on which specific electives to prioritize.

Contextual Notes

Some participants reference their experiences and the relevance of courses without detailing specific prerequisites or dependencies, leaving some assumptions about course importance and future applications unaddressed.

Who May Find This Useful

Students in engineering transfer programs, particularly those considering mechanical or electrical engineering, may find this discussion relevant for elective selection.

I'm currently in a transfer program at my local college. I have a few choices on what electives to take for my engineering degree, and I'm looking towards mechanical engineering (I'm fairly sure it will be mechanical but it's possibly I may go for electrical in the future). I was wondering which of these classes would benefit me the most?

9-12 credits from the following:

Programming in C for Engineering ... 3 credits
Statics ........ 3 credits
Mechanics of Materials ... 3 credits
Thermodynamics ...... 3 credits
Dynamics ........ 3 credits
Circuit Theory ...... 4 credits
Digital Logic Design ..... 4 credits
General Physics 3 ...... 3 credits

All of the classes you have listed (except for digital logic maybe) are absolutely required for an ME curriculum. So take your pick...

I have touched on all those topics during my time at University. Apart from programming in C (which I believe I will touch upon during my final year as I'm going into robotics.

Personally I would take statics because it provides the fundamental basics for many of the upper level ME classes.
