    Composition Steel
AI Thread Summary
The chemical composition analysis indicates a steel with 0.472% carbon, 0.67% manganese, and 98.4% iron, categorizing it as medium carbon steel rather than mild steel. The presence of manganese enhances wear resistance, aligning with properties typical of medium carbon steels like AISI 1040. The other elements present are impurities resulting from low purification processes during production. Overall, the steel's characteristics suggest it is unalloyed and suitable for applications requiring a balance of ductility and strength. This analysis confirms the material's classification and potential uses in various applications.

carbon steel?

Changing the title makes me look foolish. The original title was "what material is this". After that, you expect me to help you? Forget it!

Hello encik_lai,

The only element of interest there is C with it's 0.47% suggesting a mild carbon steel unalloyed. Like http://www.matbase.com/material-cat...erial-properties-of-high-grade-steel-c45.html
So close to a C45 or 1.0503.
The other impurities are the usual result of melting down 2 oil-tankers 500 cars and nuclear reactor parts and low purification thereafter as this steel is not with very expensive properties.

Ah forgot to mention, all said above is true for mass %.

Fe 98.4, Mn 0.67, C 0.472, Si 0.216, is a medium carbon steel, not a mild steel.The Mn gives it some wear resistance.

Medium carbon steel: approximately 0.29% to 0.54% carbon content with 0.60 to 1.65% manganese content (e.g. AISI 1040 steel). Balances ductility and strength and has good wear resistance;
