SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a prospective PhD candidate from India seeking advice on US universities for pursuing a PhD in photonics or electromagnetics. The individual holds a BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems Engineering from Lancaster University with a 2:1 average and is completing an MSc in Engineering focused on photonics, specifically slow-light applications of photonic crystals. The candidate has not yet taken the physics GRE, which is a common requirement for admission into US graduate programs in these fields.

PREREQUISITES
  • BEng (Hons) in Electronic Systems Engineering
  • MSc in Engineering with a focus on Photonics
  • Understanding of slow-light applications and photonic crystals
  • Familiarity with the physics GRE examination
NEXT STEPS
  • Research US universities with strong programs in photonics and electromagnetics
  • Prepare for and take the physics GRE examination
  • Explore funding opportunities and assistantships for PhD candidates
  • Connect with current PhD students in photonics for insights and advice
USEFUL FOR

International students, particularly from engineering backgrounds, who are considering pursuing a PhD in photonics or electromagnetics in the United States.

Hi

I am originally from India and finished my BEng (Hons) Electronic Systems Engineering at Lancaster University, United Kingdom. My degree average was 60% , 2:1 (Upper second). My final year project was on mm-wave waveguides.

Currently, I am on way to finish my MSc Engineering (by research) at the same university. My research concentration is in Photonics with focus on slow-light applications of photonic crystals.

Could someone please advise, which US universities do I stand a chance to pursue a PhD in photonics/electromagnetics?

Thank you
