Discussion Overview

The thread explores the comparative value and capabilities of engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers in society. It raises questions about who might be considered the most useful or superior among these professions, touching on themes of societal impact and personal attributes.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant provocatively asks who is the "most capable" among engineers, physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers, suggesting a need to abandon restraint in the discussion.
  • Another participant expresses disdain for the poll, labeling it as meaningless and pointless.
  • A third participant humorously suggests that Archimedes, as a mathematical philosopher of physics, could be considered superior due to his contributions to real-world applications.
  • A mathematical formula is presented by one participant, attempting to quantify the difficulty of disciplines based on various factors, though its relevance to the main question is unclear.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of opinions, with some dismissing the discussion as trivial while others engage with the question more seriously. There is no consensus on who is superior or more useful, and multiple competing views remain.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes subjective opinions and humorous remarks, which may limit the seriousness of the debate. The mathematical formula introduced lacks context and may not be universally accepted or understood.

Who is the most capable of them all?

It is time to break the taboos, abandon all courtesy and let loose all forms of restraint. The winner must be decided, so let it begin.

Who is all-round better, cooler and most useful for society?

The engineer?
The physicists?
The mathematician?
Or the philosopher?

Wow. I've seen some meaningless and pointless polls on this forum before. This one has got to be near the top of that list.

Ooops.. did I just say that one out loud?

+1 on that !

The arrogant engineer?
The solitary physicists?
The obsessed mathematician?
Or the absent-minded philosopher?

Easy, Archimedes. A mathematical philosopher of physics and its real world application in war.

Why not? I love baits, especially if they use sardines! Those are yummy!

The difficulty, D, of any particular discipline is:

D = \frac{\ln(R)\coth(\frac{C-P}{G})}{(.9P + .1I)}

where
P is the student's propensity to work (persperation)
I is the student's innate understanding of the subject (inspiration)
R is the work load generated by the class
C is the instantaneous competency of the department's faculty
G is the social congruence of the pedagogical negotiation between student and faculty.
