Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the retraction of two articles from the New Journal of Physics, specifically exploring the reasons behind these retractions and the implications for the authors, particularly Prof. Ulf Leonhardt. The scope includes aspects of academic publishing, retraction policies, and the historical context of the journal.

Discussion Character

 • Debate/contested
 • Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

 • Some participants note that the retracted articles involve subwavelength imaging and question the reasons for their retraction.
 • Others highlight Prof. Ulf Leonhardt's notable contributions to optics, including his work on invisibility objects and wave-particle duality, suggesting his prominence in the field.
 • There is uncertainty expressed about whether journals typically disclose reasons for retractions, with some participants asserting that they generally do.
 • One participant mentions that this is the first instance of retraction for the New Journal of Physics and notes Prof. Leonhardt's previous role as Associate Editor.
 • A later reply provides a link to Retraction Watch, which reportedly has additional context regarding the retractions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express uncertainty regarding the reasons for the retractions and whether journals typically provide such information. There is no consensus on the specific reasons for the retractions or the implications for the authors involved.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects a lack of clarity on the retraction process and the historical context of the New Journal of Physics, as well as the significance of the authors' previous work.

According to New Journal of Physics (http://iopscience.iop.org/1367-2630/page/Forthcoming%20articles) :
Retraction: Evidence for subwavelength imaging with positive refraction (2011 New J. Phys. 13 033016) Yun Gui Ma, Sahar Sahebdivan, C K Ong, Tomáˇs Tyc and Ulf Leonhardt
Retraction: Subwavelength imaging with materials of in-principle arbitrarily low index contrast (2012 New J. Phys. 14 025001) Y G Ma, S Sahebdivan, C K Ong, T Tyc and U Leonhardt

But why?

Not sure. Do journals usually state the reason they retract articles?

Seems this is the first time of retraction for New Journal of Physics, and Prof. Ulf Leonhardt once was Associate Editor of this journal.
