Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the discomfort associated with dental cleanings, exploring reasons for the pain experienced during the procedure and potential alternatives that might reduce discomfort while maintaining cleanliness. The scope includes personal experiences, perceptions of dental practices, and the relationship between dental hygiene and pain.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Personal experience sharing

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses that teeth cleaning is always painful and questions if there are less painful methods to achieve the same level of cleanliness.
  • Another participant suggests that if teeth cleaning is painful, it may be beneficial to request a different dental assistant, implying that sensitivity may vary among individuals.
  • A participant shares a personal experience of chronic pain due to gum infections and tartar accumulation, indicating that while cleaning healthy teeth may not hurt, issues related to dental hygiene can lead to significant discomfort.
  • There is a mention of the tools used during cleaning, specifically a sharp vibrating instrument that may cause discomfort in sensitive areas, raising questions about why many people fear dental visits if cleanings are not inherently painful.
  • One participant notes that many people visit the dentist for issues that are typically painful, rather than for routine cleaning, which may contribute to the overall dread of dental appointments.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the pain associated with teeth cleaning, with some asserting that it should not hurt while others share experiences of significant discomfort, particularly related to underlying dental issues. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the general experience of pain during dental cleanings.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference personal experiences and perceptions, which may not reflect broader trends or medical consensus on dental hygiene practices and pain management.

It always hurts a lot to get our teeth cleaned. Although afterwards it is not completely white either.

Why does it hurt so much to get our teeth cleaned? Is there a way to get it cleaned without all the pain yet just as clean either in theory or practice?

Teeth cleaning hurts? Maybe you need to request a different dental assistant do your cleanings. Unless you have unusually sensitive teeth, teeth cleaning doesn't hurt.

However, pains due to gum infections caused by unsatisfactory dental hygene DO hurt. Trust me, I've had some tartar accumulation under the gum, had terrible pains, removed tartar 7 months ago, no pains for 7 months and now it hurts me again. Apparently it's a chronical matter now. The doctor told me that the gum no longer adheres to the tooth and germs and/or microbs could enter there at any second. This recurrence is quite awkward, since I've cleaned my teeth perfectly since may...

The most unberable pains are from teeth problems...Cleaning healthy teeth doesn't hurt, it takes time and for lazy people that's a problem.

doesn't the dentist use a very thin hence sharp vibrating stick at the place between your teeth and gum and in between teeth? This is both the most sensitive place and the dirtiest as plaque usually builds up there.

Also if teeth cleaning doesn't hurt than why do I get the impression that many people dread going to the dentist?

Because most people don't go to the dentist for a detartration (plaque removal). They go for matters whose resolutions usually implies pain.
