Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the performance comparison between an Intel Core i7 920 and a Core 2 Quad Q9400. Participants explore the implications of different architectures, specifications, and potential performance outcomes in various applications.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the i7 920 may offer similar performance to the Q9400 for general applications, with differences potentially within 10%.
  • Others argue that due to architectural improvements in the i7 920, such as Turbo Boost and Hyper-Threading, it may outperform the Q9400 by up to 20% in memory-intensive applications.
  • A participant notes that the i7 920 is based on a newer microarchitecture (Nehalem), which generally suggests moderate performance improvements over the older Core microarchitecture of the Q9400.
  • One participant expresses a viewpoint that CPU performance may not significantly impact most applications, implying that other factors could be more critical.
  • Another participant advises waiting for the i7 920 to mature before making a decision, suggesting that performance may improve over time.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the performance comparison, with multiple competing views regarding the extent of performance differences and the relevance of CPU performance in practical applications.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention different platforms (X58 for i7 and X48 for Q9400) which may affect performance outcomes. There are also assumptions about the types of applications being considered, which remain unspecified.

Will an entrance level Intel Core I7 920 be faster than a Core 2 Quad Q9400?

Just asking...

Still they have quite similar main specs the processors are quite different to compare.
At least you will run the processors on different platforms, say, X58 and X48 respectively.
On one hand for general applications you will have almost the same performance. I think the difference will be within some unnoticeable 10%.
On the other hand due to the improvements to the Core I7 arch (namely, Turbo Boost, Hyper-Threading, QPI, L3 cache and overall memory arch) for some memory intensive applications you may hope to see another 20%.

Are you building?

The Core i7 is based on a very new microarchitecture, named 'Nehalem'. Core 2 is based on the previous generation, the Core microarchitecture. From general principle, I'd go with the newer (i7) - you would expect moderate improvements.

Not that CPU performance should matter much, it's not a bottleneck in most applications.

I'd wait a bit until the Core i7 will mature, say a year.
