Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of autonomous cars controlling traffic signals, specifically the introduction of a fourth white light to indicate such control. Participants explore implications for traffic flow, safety, and historical precedents related to traffic signal control.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Historical

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants reference an article proposing a fourth white light for autonomous cars to signal their control over traffic lights, suggesting it could improve traffic flow.
  • Others express skepticism, arguing that concerns about autonomous cars are distractions from more pressing issues.
  • Several participants note that the idea of emergency vehicles controlling traffic signals has been proposed since the 1970s, questioning why such technology has not been more widely implemented due to cost concerns.
  • Concerns are raised about the potential for hacking the system, with participants suggesting that simulating autonomous car signals could be a vulnerability.
  • One participant mentions a fictional portrayal of traffic signal manipulation in the TV show Numb3rs, drawing parallels to real-world discussions.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a mix of interest and skepticism regarding the implementation of autonomous car-controlled traffic signals. There is no clear consensus on the feasibility or desirability of such a system, and historical references to similar proposals highlight ongoing concerns about cost and safety.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include a lack of detailed discussion on the technical feasibility of implementing the proposed system, as well as unresolved questions about the safety implications for pedestrians and cyclists.

In this article, traffic researchers looking to improve traffic flow via autonomous cars and a 4th white light on the traffic light to signal that autonomous cars are controlling the light please follow their lead.

Cue the Outer Limits theme song:

“Do not attempt to control your television. We control the horizontal. We control the vertical. …”

You've got bigger things to worry about than autonomous cars. It's all a distraction from what really matters.

I saw that story this morning. Should be interesting, fun times.

1970's era, a proposal was to have emergency vehicles control traffic lights so as to lessen their time to a situation. Saw that in a science magazines of the era. This is just a re-hash from 50 years ago.

Any city put that technology into operation?
Why not? It costs money. Taxpayer money.

It's a thing in the US:

What about pedestrians and cyclist?

Doesn't this make the system easy to hack? No need for the "real Napster" traffic hack anymore! Just simulate autonomous car signals.

Of course. It is implemented in most cities in Silicon Valley where we respond.

It was even factored into Numb3rs — Season 3, Episode 5, “Traffic.”

In the episode the perpetrator used a device like the ones on emergency vehicles to preempt traffic signals (turning them green) to open an escape route
