Capacitance of a Spherical Capacitor?
I don't think you've done the calculation wrong it looks correct the way you have written it, except the units inside your equation are in meters since you have already converted to that unit. Are you out by a factor of tens/tens. If that's not the issue then I don't know what the problem is...- AlexCdeP

Acceleration of electron due to finite sheet at voltage
Thanks for the reassurance. I'll hopefully get on with implementation and then add an update somewhere when I work out how to model it as I can't find a similar problem online at the moment, although I know that it's been done before.- AlexCdeP

UK student looking for internships in US. Recommendations?
Hi all. I recently attended a very inspiring talk given by a company which sponsors European students for a so-called J-1 visa which enables us to apply for maximum 12 months internships in the US. I would be supported the CIEE which means that all of the problems in terms of insurance for...- AlexCdeP

Acceleration of electron due to finite sheet at voltage
Thanks, so would you agree until I actually get the system implemented its going to be difficult/impossible to calculate the change in energy? It's frustrating because I feel like there must be a way to calculate the electric field theoretically knowing only the dimensions of the plate and the...- AlexCdeP

Acceleration of electron due to finite sheet at voltage
Homework Statement Suppose I am undertaking an experiment using a scanning electron microscope in which there is a positively charged plate underneath the target sample. I want to find the change in energy of the electron due to a positive voltage on this plate from the point it leaves the...- AlexCdeP

Programs Difficulties encountered in my Physics degree, what should I do?
Great reply thanks! Yeah I'm in a 3rd year of an integrated masters, so next year will be my final year, but I don't write a bachelors thesis this year. Maybe I need to meet up with the lecturer, even though I don't see at the moment what it would achieve. I feel like this far into things I...- AlexCdeP

Programs Difficulties encountered in my Physics degree, what should I do?
Hi guys, this is mainly a question to people who have completed a degree in physics already, but I would love replies from anybody who has a opinion, or has had a similar experience. I am in the third year of a masters degree in physics. As I have progressed through the degree things have...- AlexCdeP

Career opportunities for MS vs. BS in Physics
No you're not terrible at physics, you already have a degree in it which makes you one of the very few people on planet Earth who even reach that level. Look at your MS and what you still have to do for it, now sit back and think how much you are dreading it. Get your head down and honestly try...- AlexCdeP

What Are The Career Paths in Pure, Applied, and Engineering Physics?
Well I'll try to answer in a very general way. I study pure physics, when you take this route, by the time you are in third year like me the course becomes extremely mathematical and abstract. You delve further into the realms of quantum mechanics, particle physics, and solid state and the...- AlexCdeP

Using the commutation relation [AB,C]=A[B,C]+[A,C]B canonical H
Under the effect of an electric and magnetic field the momentum in the Hamiltonian becomes the canonical momentum, p-qA where p is the linear momentum and A is the vector potential so H=(1/2m)(p-qA)^2 + qV where V is the scalar potential. I am trying to find [H,(p-qA)]. My main question arises...- AlexCdeP

Fourth order boundary value problem
Hi guys, so I'm stuck on quite an interesting problem, and have been for a few days now. If anybody can take the time to have a look at it that would be the most incredible thing ever, because I have reached a point where I am at a loss. Solve the following 4th order differential equation...- AlexCdeP

Determining Surface tension of a liquid with Poiseulle's Law
Well I can't tell you how to make an experiment to find it but there is definitely a relationship between the viscosity of the fluid and the surface tension. If you could find the viscosity you could potentially find the strength of the attractive force between molecules and could adapt this for...- AlexCdeP

What is the Behavior of Particle Distribution Near Maximum in Thermal Physics?
I feel like information is missing. I'm assuming that the particles in the box are ideal gas particles? If so I think you need to find the partition function. To give you a hint the partition function for an ideal gas is found using an integral (wikipedia it and hopefully you might have seen it...- AlexCdeP

Condition for expectation value of an operator to depend on time
Thanks for the help david, what a complete waste of both of our time. Maybe it's far too obvious for you? I have no idea what's wrong with my post, so it'd be great if you could enlighten me.- AlexCdeP
