Graduate Regular singular points (definition)
Thanks for the reply, I copied the ODE right, just didn't divide write, good catch though :) I'm not sure what you mean by "poles". If something is analytic, it means it can be represented by a series solution, correct? Thanks, David- Substance D

Graduate Regular singular points (definition)
Hello, I am trying to understand the definition of regular point, regular singular point and irregular point for example, the ode. what would be the r,rs or i points of this? x^3y'''(x)+3x^2y''(x)+4xy(x)=0 dividing gives the standard form y''+(3/x)y' + (4/x^2)y=0 So...- Substance D

Math I want to succeed in a career in science, but i am not a math genius
I failed almost all the math classes I took in high school, but once I got to uni I really buckled down and spent a lot of time really learning the subject. I spent a lot of time reading the history of mathematics and philosophy of mathematics. I have tutored a few people in calculus who were...- Substance D

Undergrad Do Magnetic Fields Actually Perform Work?
I'm confused as to wither or not magnetic fields do work. From reading the forums, as well as my textbook and online resources there seems to be conflicting answers. We talk about magnetic energy, and how work relates to change in energy but then I hear that magnetic fields do no work. Could...- Substance D

Undergrad Solving Problems Using Ratios: Tips & Tricks
I guess the problem I have with it is, if I have two equations, like with this example it was PV = nRT , but in this case I would have that equation twice (one for the totally known system and one for the "half" known system), and since n,R and V are constant I can just ignore them, but what...- Substance D

How to study 12+ hours per day without hurting your
If you want a good stretch that will help you after sitting for awhile and you can do it using a chair... stand up, and put your left or right leg on the seat of the chair (doesnt matter how high the chair is, but your flexibility level could prevent you from doing this on a higher chair)...- Substance D

Undergrad Solving Problems Using Ratios: Tips & Tricks
Hello, I'm currently in my 2nd year of physics and one thing I've noticed is how often problems can be solved using ratios, for example I had a problem in my thermodynamics class that involved finding a temperature after knowing its pressure and using the triple-point of water and its...- Substance D

What was your first to last year grade progress
hey, I am curious to hear how everyones grades changed as they progressed through higher education? In high school I had around a 40% average, then after 5 years I re-took all my high school math and science then applied at university to get my honors in physics, my first year I had a 65%...- Substance D

High School Math subjects prior to starting physics
The "Demystified" series seems good enough, personally I find that the trick is not finding a good book, its finding a book that you'll actually do. Pick a book, and look at the questions its ask you and see if they are easy enough that you could understand them on your own, but hard enough...- Substance D

High School Math subjects prior to starting physics
I really enjoyed "Calculus Made Easy", https://www.amazon.com/dp/0333772431/?tag=pfamazon01-20 I had to teach myself a bunch of calculus and trig before going to school for Physics, because it had been 5 years since I had been in school and I dug this book. Its style of writing is a bit older...- Substance D

Is it Possible to Teach Yourself Advanced Math Topics?
Thanks everyone for your input, just another reason why I think these forums are by far the greatest on the internet. Since I am only 2nd year, I've got a long way to go. I think after my 3rd year (when I take my final math class - Complex Anaylsis) I should have a better idea of where I am...- Substance D
