What AI’s are you using for technical translation into English? Are there languages that the AI’s are particularly good or bad at?

Well, I am not doing technical translation, but there is an AI that is good at translating text in general called Gemma 4. What type of AI do you want to use? Cloud or local? If self-hosted, the answer depends on what the specs of your computer are (RAM/VRAM).

Gemma 4 is open source, and can support 35 languages out of the box.

I am interested in cloud based. At work I have access to gemini, grok and chatgpt, but I am not wedded to them. I am interested in only translating a few papers a month, so I prefer simplicity and quality to cost. I am interested in major European languages, Chinese and Japanese.

Well, Gemini might be the best. That is what Gemma was designed off of, as the self-hosted Gemma was made by the same team behind the cloud based Gemini (Google / Google DeepMind). Kinda confusing that the model names are similar.

Source for Gemini being the best for translation: https://artificialanalysis.ai/models/multilingual
This list is a little outdated, as Gemini 4 is out, but the Google team has topped these multilingual charts before.
