SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the concept of "relative frequency" in probability, specifically in the context of an event occurring 500 times out of 2000 trials. The correct terminology to describe this is that the relative frequency estimate of probability is 500/2000, which simplifies to 1/4 or 25%. Participants clarified that both "probability" and "relative frequency" can be used interchangeably in this context, emphasizing the importance of precise language in statistical discussions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic probability concepts
  • Familiarity with relative frequency calculations
  • Knowledge of statistical terminology
  • Basic mathematical skills for fraction simplification
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "probability theory fundamentals"
  • Learn about "relative frequency vs. theoretical probability"
  • Explore "applications of probability in statistics"
  • Study "how to calculate probabilities in experiments"
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for students, educators, and professionals in statistics, data analysis, and anyone seeking to clarify their understanding of probability and relative frequency in practical scenarios.

Lets say I have an event that happened 500 times in 2000 trials.

Then I want to say the event has 1 in 4 ... what? chance? probability? relative frequency?

Its been years since I took a course on this stuff. I need the right words here.

thanks

Yes, I would call it "relative frequency".

The classical statement would be that the relative frequency estimate of probability is 500/2000 or 1/4.

Or you could simply say that the event occurred in 25% of the trials you observed.

What, exactly, are you looking to say?
