Combining SR and GR time dilation

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the combination of time dilation effects from gravitational fields and special relativity. Specifically, Lambda 1 represents time dilation due to gravity, while Lambda 2 denotes time dilation for a moving body under special relativity. The consensus is that these two effects should be combined multiplicatively for a moving particle in a gravitational field, confirming that both Lambda values are greater than or equal to one.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of gravitational time dilation concepts
  • Familiarity with special relativity principles
  • Knowledge of proper time and static observers
  • Basic mathematical skills for combining dilation factors
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the mathematical formulation of gravitational time dilation
  • Study the implications of special relativity on moving bodies
  • Explore advanced topics in general relativity
  • Investigate real-world applications of time dilation in GPS technology
USEFUL FOR

Physicists, students of relativity, and anyone interested in the interplay between gravitational fields and special relativity will benefit from this discussion.

Just seeking a bit of guidance if I may ?

If Lambda 1 is the time dilation caused by a gravitational field (ie proper time outside field/proper time inside field for static observers), and Lambda 2 is the usual time dilation under special relativity for a moving body (both lambda's >= 1), how should I combine them for a moving particle in a gravitational field, is is additive, multiplicative or some other combo ?

Regards

Multiplicative.

Thanks very much
