Use this topic to post links to helpful/informative websites about astronomy & cosmology.
Last edited:
This thread focuses on sharing resources related to astronomy and cosmology, including links to research articles, online calculators, and informative websites. The discussion encompasses various aspects of cosmology, observational techniques, and theoretical considerations.
Participants do not reach a consensus on the implications of Omega measurements for the universe's topology or finiteness, and multiple competing views remain regarding the nature of dark matter and the interpretation of observational data.
Some discussions involve unresolved assumptions about the measurements of cosmological parameters and the definitions of terms like "flat" or "finite." The implications of these measurements on theoretical models are also not fully settled.
This thread may be useful for individuals interested in current research in astronomy and cosmology, including students, educators, and enthusiasts looking for resources and discussions on these topics.

Even if Omega was precisely equal to one, you could still have a finite universe: in this case, its topology would have to be multiply-connected. For example, a 3-torus, a kind of 3-dimensional version of the surface of a doughnut, is flat everywhere, but its volume is finite. General relativity (and hence the standard big bang model) has nothing to say about topology. Perhaps this is a limitation, perhaps not. Anyway, here are some articles on the subject of cosmic topology:

Topology of the Universe: Theory and Observations by Jean-Pierre Luminet and Boudewijn F. Roukema
Cosmic Topology by M. Lachieze-Rey and J.P.Luminet
Topology and the Cosmic Microwave Background by Janna Levin
