Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the concept of a googolplex and its representation in bytes, specifically in relation to yottabytes and terabytes. Participants explore large numbers, their definitions, and their implications in mathematical contexts, while also engaging in a broader conversation about the nature of numbers and naming conventions.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant states that a googol YB is 10^124 bytes and seeks to convert this into terabytes.
  • Another participant corrects the initial claim, asserting that a googol is 10^100 and a googolplex is 10 raised to the power of a googol, clarifying that 10^124 refers to a googol of yottabytes, not a googolplex.
  • A subsequent post attempts to express a googolplex in bytes, providing a lengthy numerical representation but also seeks conversion into terabytes.
  • Several participants engage in a light-hearted debate about large numbers, introducing concepts like Graham's number and the idea of "my number is bigger than yours."
  • One participant mentions pi without a decimal point, leading to a discussion about the nature of numbers and infinity, with others asserting that infinity is not a number.
  • There is a discussion about the origin of the name "Google," with participants sharing various theories and links to external resources.
  • Some participants express humorous or exaggerated sentiments about the frequency of the word "Google" in the thread.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants exhibit a mix of agreement and disagreement, particularly regarding the definitions and implications of large numbers. The discussion remains unresolved on several points, especially concerning the nature of infinity and the origins of the name "Google."

Contextual Notes

Some claims are based on assumptions about the definitions of large numbers, and there are unresolved mathematical steps in the conversions discussed. The conversation also reflects a playful engagement with the concepts rather than a rigorous mathematical analysis.

One googol is 10100. A googolplex is 101 googol. You could not write such a number down. It is not 10124.

oops error, 10124 is a googol of yottabytes not a googleplex. oops

a googolplex YB would be 101000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000024 bytes

whats that in TB

Pah!

After I met "[URL number[/URL], the Googolplex is just a fluffy little kitten to me!

oh yeah... well how about the bob. its grahamgoogleplex for B1
B2 is graham^(graham^googleplex) and so on.
it ends at B googleplex^graham

Yeees... well B googleplex^graham+1 is bigger.:-p

Anyone can make up numbers. Graham's number has the distinction of being the largest number ever used seriously in a mathematical equation.

How abou pi without a decimal point. I know it's pointless to engage in a "my number is bigger than yours" thing but i find it hard to resist.

"pi without a decimal point" is not a number.

I just meant infinity.

infinity is not a number!

So did Google get its name from this "googol" or is it the other way around. Now I see why they named their main campus at Mountain View the GooglePlex. =D

Nice stuff there ;D

I believe that google got its name from an error in spelling. It was supposed to be gogle, but they added an extra o. But I'm not sure about this. I suppose I should google it.

I've heard the word google far too much in this thread.

Google needs to die.

Well, not with that attitude...

I announce that red will now be a number and no longer a color. I am enthusiastic about numbers and I want more of them! :D
