SUMMARY

A potential new volcano may be forming in Pueblo Viejo, Michoacán, as residents report unusual geological activity, including burned goats and a soccer field breaking apart, releasing steam, ash, and gas. Soil temperature measurements reached approximately 250 degrees Celsius (over 480 degrees Fahrenheit). The community's heightened concern is influenced by their proximity to Parícutin, a historically significant cinder-cone volcano that emerged in 1943. Experts suggest that the current phenomena may be geothermal rather than indicative of a new volcanic formation.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of geothermal phenomena
  • Knowledge of volcanic activity and types of volcanoes
  • Familiarity with soil temperature measurement techniques
  • Awareness of the historical context of Parícutin volcano
NEXT STEPS
  • Research geothermal phenomena and their effects on local ecosystems
  • Study the geological history and formation of Parícutin volcano
  • Learn about soil temperature measurement methods and their significance in volcanology
  • Investigate the signs and monitoring techniques for new volcanic activity
USEFUL FOR

Geologists, volcanologists, environmental scientists, and residents of volcanic regions interested in understanding volcanic activity and its implications.

People in the Mexican town of Pueblo Viejo have a concern - a fear that a volcano might be developing underneath them.

Suspicion over the formation of a volcano in the Michoacán state started last Sunday, when villagers discovered that some of their goats had been inexplicably burned. Then a nearby soccer field started to break apart, releasing steam, ash and gas into the air, http://mexiconewsdaily.com/news/burned-goats-trigger-volcano-questions/otimex. When alarmed residents contacted authorities, researchers took the temperature of the soil and found it to be roughly 250 degrees Celsius (more than 480 degrees Fahrenheit).

Residents' concerns may reflect their proximity to and history with Paricutin, which is described as a pyroclastic cone.
People may be on high alert because of Pueblo Viejo's proximity to Parícutin, a cinder-cone volcano about 200 miles away. Parícutin was the first volcano researchers could track for its entire life: It formed suddenly in a cornfield in 1943 and within a year had grown more than than 1,000 feet tall, https://naturalhistory.si.edu/onehundredyears/expeditions/paricutin.html. It went dormant in 1952.

If a completely new volcano was forming, unconnected with other known volcanos,
I would expect signs of it, significant tremors at least, before lava breaks to surface and starts burning animals etc.
