Particle Physics: O(1 TeV) and O(1 pb^-1)

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the notation O(1 TeV) and O(1 pb^-1) in particle physics, specifically focusing on the meaning of these symbols and their implications in the context of energy and cross-section units.

Discussion Character

  • Conceptual clarification, Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants explain that the notation O(1 TeV) signifies "of order of 1 TeV," indicating a range of values around this energy level.
  • Others elaborate that "order of magnitude" refers to a scale, suggesting that O(1 TeV) likely encompasses values greater than 0.1 TeV and less than 10 TeV.
  • A participant references Landau symbols as a related concept but does not clarify how it directly connects to the original question.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the interpretation of the notation O(1 TeV) and its meaning related to order of magnitude, but there is no consensus on the broader implications or applications of this notation.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not address potential limitations or assumptions regarding the interpretation of the notation or its application in different contexts.

I saw a sign in particle physics ;O(1 TeV) and O(1 pb^-1). TeV is unit of energy and pb^-1 is unit of cross scetin I wonder why these signs are putting into parahenthesis

So O(1TeV) means of order of 1 TeV..

More explicitly, "order of magnitude" (power of ten), i.e. "probably greater than 0.1 TeV and less than 10 TeV"

thanks for answers
