Homework Help Overview

The discussion revolves around a problem related to atmospheric pressure and the height of the atmosphere, assuming uniform density and incompressibility of air. The original poster is uncertain about how to approach the problem, which involves applying principles of fluid statics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking, Mathematical reasoning

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants explore the relationship between pressure, density, and height using the equation P = ρgh. The original poster expresses confusion about the problem's context and the teacher's expectations.

Discussion Status

Some participants have provided calculations based on the given parameters, while others seek confirmation of the correctness of these calculations. There is a mix of exploration and verification occurring in the discussion.

Contextual Notes

The original poster notes a lack of similar problems in their homework or notes, indicating potential gaps in their understanding of the topic. Additionally, assumptions about the constancy of gravitational acceleration are being discussed.

1. How high would the atmosphere extend (assume P=0 at the top) if it were uniform density Pair - 1.29 kg/m3 and we assumed the air was incompressible (Patm = 1.013 x 10e5 Pa

2. maybe roh g h?

3. I don't have any idea where to start with this. There are a few ideas in there that i just don't know where my teacher is going. This is a test review and we did not have a question quite like this in the homework or notes./b]

Think about what rho g h equals

if P = roh g h
1.013 x 10e5 pa= 1.29kg/m3 x 9.8m/s2 x h
h = 8012.97 m?

can anyone confirm if i am correct or incorrect on this?

It's correct. You ought also to have been told to assume g is constant to that height.
