AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a riddle that describes the evolution of man, interpreting the phases of life and evolution as moving without feet, on four feet, and on two feet. The answer identifies man’s evolutionary journey from aquatic organisms to quadrupedal animals and finally to bipedal humans. Participants debate the interpretation of "nighttime" in the riddle, suggesting that it could symbolize the finite nature of a man's life, while evolution itself is an ongoing process, potentially likening it to a time that is still early in the day, such as "half past 7." This highlights the contrast between individual lifespan and the broader, continuous timeline of evolution.

Wait wasn't there a cane in there somewhere?

That was the story of Cane and Able.

You are thinking of:
What walks on four feet in the morning, two at noon, and three in the afternoon.

What makes you think it's nighttime? With any luck it could be half past 7 on a sunny morning, and we'll be back to no-feet soon.

This riddle is in analogy to that of the Sphinx - however, here it describes not a lifetime, but evolution over the eons.

He's got a point. A man's lifetime is finite, like the day, but evolution over eons is not finite. Metaphorically, it could be only half past 7.

Or merely 12:01AM...
