Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around strategies and resources for preparing for the AP Calculus BC exam, particularly for a participant who is self-studying and has limited time before the exam. The conversation touches on various units of the curriculum, confidence levels in different topics, and potential study materials.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • The original poster (OP) expresses concern about their preparedness for the AP Calculus BC exam, having only covered up to Unit 6 or 7 and needing to learn Units 8, 9, and 10 in a short time frame.
  • Some participants inquire about the specifics of the curriculum and what topics the OP still needs to learn to provide more tailored advice.
  • Several participants suggest various resources, including Khan Academy, MathIsPower4U, and Paul's Online Notes, as potential study aids.
  • One participant mentions that AP Calculus BC covers content from both Calculus 1 and Calculus 2, while another emphasizes the importance of reviewing earlier material while learning new topics.
  • There is a discussion about the grading scale for the BC exam, with one participant noting that a qualifying score of 3 requires only a certain percentage of correct answers, which could alleviate some pressure for the OP.
  • Some participants express uncertainty about the effectiveness of certain resources, such as the MIT OpenCourseWare calculus course, suggesting it may be more challenging than the BC curriculum.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the need for effective study strategies and resources, but there is no consensus on the best approach or the effectiveness of specific materials. Some participants express differing views on the difficulty of certain courses and the grading criteria for the exam.

Contextual Notes

The OP's confidence levels in various units suggest a need for targeted study, but the discussion does not resolve how best to balance review and new material given the time constraints. There are also varying interpretations of the curriculum and the relationship between AB and BC courses.

To amplify others' advice, as far as learning calculus goes, AP courses are better as preparation for superior quality college courses, not as a reason to skip those.

Since you seem currently more interested in efficiently gaming the admissions process for med school than in learning calculus, we may not be the best people to offer advice. Based on my wife's experience as a successful med school applicant however, I will suggest that your performance on the MCAT's may be more important than your score on an AP calc exam.

The interview is also crucial, and a grade - oriented approach to study and learning may not be helpful there. I know the admission pressures make it difficult to do otherwise at this early stage.

Since time is short, you might focus first on practice exams to identify weaknesses, and you may post questions here on topics and even individual problems that puzzle you.

good luck and best wishes.

For MCAT and memorization-heavy premed courses like biology, check out Anki

Sure, the exam will be taken on May 12. Scores will come out in early July.

Like I said, I am unsure of what I will be doing in the future. Maybe i might do calc 3? Who knows. I'll learn calc 2 again before i take that (if i do)
But for now, this is my main focus : getting a 4/5 on the AP calc exam.
