SUMMARY

This discussion centers on the search for free software and recommended literature for mechanism design, specifically focusing on four-bar mechanisms. A user mentions utilizing sophisticated design software on a MacBook and older Macs, while also emphasizing hands-on testing with cardboard models and thumbtacks to validate designs. A suggested software resource is available at this link, and a recommended book for theory is "Mechanism Design: Analysis and Synthesis" available on Amazon.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of four-bar mechanisms
  • Familiarity with design software such as Illustrator
  • Basic knowledge of mechanism design theory
  • Experience with prototyping techniques using physical materials
NEXT STEPS
  • Explore free software options for mechanism design, particularly for four-bar mechanisms
  • Read "Mechanism Design: Analysis and Synthesis" for theoretical insights
  • Investigate hands-on prototyping methods for validating mechanism functionality
  • Learn about advanced design software alternatives for mechanism simulation
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, designers, and students interested in mechanism design, particularly those focusing on four-bar mechanisms and practical testing methods.

Hi guys,
Are there any free mechanism design software's. I want to test whether a mechanism would a given work or not. It's preferably a 4 bar mechanism. Also can you suggest any good books for theory of mechanism design?
Thank you in Advance.

I wish...
I must tell you the truth here. I'm using one of the most sophisticated home computers available (MacBook), and have even better design software on my old G3 Macs and the Lisa. I can draught stuff up in several different versions of Illustrator. When it comes down to figuring out whether or not something will work, however, I cut pieces out of cardboard and link them with thumbtacks. It it doesn't work there, it ain't going to work in a commercial environment.
