Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the existence of other periodic comets similar to Halley's Comet. Participants explore the topic of periodic phenomena in the context of astronomy, specifically focusing on comets and their visibility.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about other periodic comets like Halley's Comet.
  • Another participant provides a link to a search engine for further information on periodic comets.
  • A different participant notes that there are many periodic comets with varying orbital periods, ranging from approximately 10 years to several tens of years.
  • There is a request for clarification on the original question, asking whether the inquiry is driven by a desire to observe other comets through a telescope or out of general curiosity.
  • Suggestions are made that searching for periodic comets online can yield lists of comets, their orbital periods, and visibility schedules.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the specifics of periodic comets, but there is general agreement that multiple periodic comets exist beyond Halley's Comet. The discussion remains open-ended regarding the original inquiry's intent.

Contextual Notes

Some assumptions about the nature of periodic comets and their visibility are present, but these are not fully explored or defined. The discussion does not delve into specific examples or detailed characteristics of the comets mentioned.

I'm sure Sir Edmund Halley would prefer his surname to be spelt correctly and capitalised

there are many many periodic comets from periods of a ~ 10 years to many 10's of years

No probs :)

back to your original question, was there a particular reason for it ?
ie. are you interested in knowing what other comets you may see in a telescope?
or were you just curious ?

if the first... then doing a google search on periodic comets will yield sites with lists of them
their orbital periods, when they last were visible and when they will next be visible.

cheers
Dave
