Scientists have identified a new coronavirus subgenus in a Brazilian bat with a feature that, as in the related SARS-CoV-2 virus, allows it to invade human cells, per a non–peer-reviewed study published on the preprint server bioRxiv.

SARS-CoV-2, the cause of covid-19, isn’t the only coronavirus in the world we should be keeping our eye on. Scientists appear to have just discovered a new branch of coronaviruses in Brazilian bats that could have the tools needed to spill over and infect humans.

The viral relative appears to be genetically distinct from other coronaviruses yet shares a feature with SARS-CoV-2 that may allow its kind to infect human cells. The findings suggest there are plenty of native bat coronaviruses in the wild with the potential to cause new epidemics in humans.

I think there has been an awareness of the risk of new pandemics for quite some time, they are not really particularly rare and the number of potential pathogens that could cause such an event in humans is vast and surprisingly largely unknown. There have been various pandemic preparedness initiatives often coordinated by the world health organisation for decades, if nothing else the Covid pandemic certainly increased awareness and funding.
In fact the initial focus was on the risk of influenza, a well known group of viruses and it has caused serious pandemics in the past. There was at least some attempts to increase our awareness of the world of viruses in an attempt to identify other potential risks. The outbreak of SARS-Cov 1 was a bit of a wakeup call, the coronavirus family is huge and this disease highlighted the risks of poorly understood viruses causing serious disease. The fact that the spread was contained relatively quickly, reduced the sense of threat. Its unfortunate that as SARS-Cov 2 was identified as the cause of a new infectious disease we remained largely unprepared and there was little initial urgency in global responses. The rest is as they say, history, a rather tragic one.
Now, we know that coronaviruses have probably causes epidemics/pandemics in the past but its still considered that influenza remains the greatest risk. While its true that understanding the way in which the disease develops can be extremely important in its management, we have seen how discoveries can be used in other more damaging ways.
The attempts to identify the origins of this virus and its evolutionary history have promoted a blame game and conspiracy theories which have little relevance to the problems the disease caused. In fact virtually all infectious diseases in humans originated from cross species transmission, the details of which having largely been lost to time. However we have seen how the political dimension of managing the populations health can be used in ways that are hugely damaging, we are seeing large increases in infectious diseases which are preventable.

I actually think the likelihood of a Covid 3 being the next pandemic is remote, but we have at least in response to Covid 2 learned a great deal which should improve our strategies to cope with the wide range of potential threats. Its interesting to consider that pandemics can occur in virtually all species of plants and animals, while most initiatives focus of direct threats to humanity there doesn't seem to be the same urgency in studying the effects of pandemics in other species. These potentially could represent serious threats to our food sources, so far our experience of these have caused only minor inconvenience.

Wolbachia (wikipedia article) is an extreme example of a pandemic in the animal world. It is an intracellular (inside the infected cell) parasite/symbiont that in many cases can manipulate the host reproduction to its own advantage (similar to some selfish genetic elements. it is estimated to infect 60% of insects and many nematodes (round worms).

Although it has spread through huge numbers of insect and nematode species, it can be eliminated in the lab from individuals by treatment with antibiotics. This of course has lead to lots of experiments.

Wolbachia has been used in attempts to control insect disease vectors in the wild.

There are a lot of viruses because everything has viruses, so probably billions.
They can easily be promiscuous among hosts.
