In order to make an apple pie from scratch, why do we need to recreate the universe?

I think that is similar to something Carl Sagan said .

"from scratch" meaning without any already made materials and thus implying the need to develop even the simplest elements, which were created during the first moments of the universes creation. eh?

sides, that's what grandma's recipe says, "start with a big bang, then add 2 cups of flour and... "
