AI Thread Summary
Admission to a Master's Program in a foreign country requires proposing a detailed scientific project for funding, particularly in the field of astrophysics. The focus is on projects related to astrophysical observations from space, with specific interests in Galactic Evolution, Stellar Formation-Evolution Feedback, Supernova Remnant dynamics, and the use of 21cm HI line and thermal Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effects. The applicant has received informal approval to pursue a project in Galactic-Stellar-Evolution, potentially linked to Galactic Archaeology using data from the Gaia Mission and the upcoming Plato mission. The discussion seeks advice on whether this is a suitable project choice or if alternative areas should be considered. There is also a query directed at another community member regarding their project selection in the same field.

I've sought admission to a Master's Program in a foreign country. One of the requirements to get funding is to propose a detailed scientific project that the student would possibly carry out under one of the advisors.

The Astrophysics topics that could fall into this are under the broad brush of "project based on astrophysical observations from space". My interests, and what I aim to do a PhD in eventually are these following areas: Galactic Evolution, Stellar Formation-Evolution Feedback, SNR dynamics, usage of 21cm HI line & thermal SZ, generally speaking. How this would work is I could either be extremely specific about the project itself or just mention the said area in my application & then hash out the details in pivot with my advisor (who would come into the picture once I propose the area/project). This is under the larger aegis of their Space Academy so the pool of advisors connected to varied topics is huge & the possibility that there might not be an advisor for an XYZ topic is remote.

Now I have an informal greenlight to do a project under the area of Galactic-Stellar-Evolution with a possible connection to Galactic Archaeology via the data from Gaia Mission/upcoming Plato mission (this also fits with the project call given in double quotes above).

I was wondering if my dear PF community members could advise if this is a good choice for a given project under the aforementioned area or alternatively suggest another area/project I should look at. I just felt like discussing it all here.

I graduated with a BSc in Physics in 2020. Since there were limited opportunities in my country (mostly teaching), I decided to improve my programming skills and began working in IT, first as a software engineer and later as a quality assurance engineer, where I’ve now spent about 3 years. While this career path has provided financial stability, I’ve realized that my excitement and passion aren’t really there, unlike what I felt when studying or doing research in physics. Working in IT...
I have a specialization in condensed matter physics and materials physics, and off-late, I have been seeing a lot of research directions moving towards quantum computing (AMO and non-linear optics) and the huge chunk of quantum materials research (and funding) is dedicated towards QIS and QC research. I am wondering (sort of in a dilemma), if I should consider switching my field? I am currently at the stage of a postdoc.
