Ball hanging from string, what is tension when at its lowest point?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The problem involves a pendulum consisting of a heavy ball suspended from a rope, where the tension in the rope at the lowest point of the swing is to be determined. The scenario includes the weight of the ball and its speed at the lowest point.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the forces acting on the ball at the lowest point, specifically questioning the roles of tension and weight. There is an inquiry into whether frictional forces should be considered.

Discussion Status

The discussion is focused on identifying the forces involved and clarifying assumptions regarding friction. Some participants are confirming the presence of tension and weight as the primary forces at play.

Contextual Notes

There is an indication that the problem may require ignoring frictional forces, which could affect the analysis of tension.

Homework Statement

A heavy ball with a weight of 130 is hung from the ceiling of a lecture hall on a 4.6--long rope. The ball is pulled to one side and released to swing as a pendulum, reaching a speed of 5.6 as it passes through the lowest point.

What is the tension in the rope?

Hi racer98jc, welcome to PF.

What are the forces acting on the ball at the lowest point of the swing?

Hello,

at the bottom: tension and the balls own weight are acting on it. Correct?

Correct(the question probably wants you to ignore frictional forces)
