Best basic/intuitive mathematics software?

Click For Summary
Mathematica is criticized for being counter-intuitive and overly complex for basic mathematical functions, making simple operations like addition and division unnecessarily complicated. Users are seeking more straightforward software that allows for easy execution of basic calculations without extensive learning of syntax. While calculators are acknowledged as better for simple tasks, the discussion emphasizes the need for intuitive mathematical software. Some users argue that Mathematica can be simple once its syntax is learned. Overall, the conversation highlights the desire for user-friendly math software that balances simplicity with functionality.

I've used Mathematica, and I find it really counter-intuitive. It's really complex for the user who isn't accustomed to math software, and doing simple mathematic functions, like addition/division/multiplication, etc. is insanely complex with Mathematica.

Now, I know that a calculator is better-suited to those kinds of functions, but I'd like a piece of software that can do simple things, you know, simply.

Any recommendations?

No offense, but why is it really complex to type "(2 + 3) / 4" and press Evaluate?

You are going to have to learn the particulars of syntax for any piece of math software on the market. I find Mathematica to be perfectly simple.

Here is a little puzzle from the book 100 Geometric Games by Pierre Berloquin. The side of a small square is one meter long and the side of a larger square one and a half meters long. One vertex of the large square is at the center of the small square. The side of the large square cuts two sides of the small square into one- third parts and two-thirds parts. What is the area where the squares overlap?
