Best efficiency DC or AC motors?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the efficiency and suitability of DC versus AC motors for electric cars, particularly in the context of a DIY project. Participants explore factors such as efficiency, torque, speed, and the implications of using inverters with AC motors.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests that three-phase AC induction motors are the most efficient.
  • Another participant raises concerns about the starting issues associated with induction motors.
  • A different viewpoint argues that DC motors are better for low-speed power, noting that AC motors require vector control for low-speed torque.
  • This participant also claims that DC motors are simpler and less expensive, and describes brushless DC motors as similar to induction motors.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing opinions on the efficiency and practicality of AC versus DC motors, indicating that multiple competing views remain without a consensus.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not fully resolve the implications of energy loss when using inverters with AC motors, nor do they clarify the specific conditions under which each motor type may be preferable.

I was thinking in the last weeks about electric cars and thinking about a DIY project in a future.

Here's the problem, which motor is best for an electricar? Which have the best efficiency, torque and speed?

Now considering that choosing an AC motor an inverter is needed and there would lost some energy, which one is the best for the diy project?

AC or DC

DC is the better choice for power at low speeds. If the AC motor is used a Vector type control would be needed to give torque at low speed. DC is simpler and less expensive and can provide what is needed. A brushless DC motor is nothing more than a glorified induction motor.
