SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the best Russian and Soviet physics books available in English, particularly for undergraduate levels and above. Key recommendations include "Course of Theoretical Physics" by Lev Landau and Evgeny Lifshitz, and "Methods Of Quantum Field Theory In Statistical Physics" by Abrikosov, Gorkov, and Dzyaloshinksi. The conversation also highlights the significance of Irodov's collection of problems, although it is not classified as a traditional textbook. Participants emphasize the importance of these texts as foundational references in the field of physics.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of undergraduate-level physics concepts
  • Familiarity with quantum field theory
  • Knowledge of statistical physics
  • Ability to read and comprehend advanced physics texts in English
NEXT STEPS
  • Research "Course of Theoretical Physics" by Lev Landau and Evgeny Lifshitz
  • Explore "Methods Of Quantum Field Theory In Statistical Physics" by Abrikosov, Gorkov, and Dzyaloshinksi
  • Investigate Irodov's problem collections and their applications in physics education
  • Examine other classic Russian/Soviet physics texts available in English
USEFUL FOR

Students, educators, and physics enthusiasts seeking to deepen their understanding of theoretical and statistical physics through classic Russian and Soviet literature.

Hi,
What do you think are the best Russian/Soviet/MIR physics books that are available in English? Should be undergraduate level or higher. All time classics that really explain the subject matter well. Thanks.

Yes, those are the best. But I already have them!

Irodov is not a textbook per se but a collection of nice problems.

There’s actually many different books by Irodov.

Do you consider the textbooks by Irodov to be as good as the problem book?

This is a major reference in T>0 quantum field theory:
  • Abrikosov, Gorkov and Dzyaloshinksi, Methods Of Quantum Field Theory In Statistical Physics
Edit: apparently this was already asked before, see https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/soviet-or-russian-physics-and-math-textbooks.502022/
that QFT book looks very interesting. That other thread involved mostly math books and physics problem books, and I am curious about physics textbooks, which is why I started this one. Thanks.
