AI Thread Summary
The discussion centers on identifying notable Russian, Soviet, and MIR physics books available in English, suitable for undergraduate level or higher. Key recommendations include "Course of Theoretical Physics" by Lev Landau and Evgeny Lifshitz, recognized as a definitive reference in theoretical physics. Another significant mention is "Methods of Quantum Field Theory in Statistical Physics" by Abrikosov, Gorkov, and Dzyaloshinski, noted for its relevance in T>0 quantum field theory. The conversation also touches on the works of Irodov, highlighting his collection of problems rather than traditional textbooks, sparking debate about the value of his textbooks compared to his problem sets. The thread references a previous discussion on similar topics, indicating ongoing interest in the quality of Russian physics literature.

Hi,
What do you think are the best Russian/Soviet/MIR physics books that are available in English? Should be undergraduate level or higher. All time classics that really explain the subject matter well. Thanks.

Yes, those are the best. But I already have them!

Irodov is not a textbook per se but a collection of nice problems.

There’s actually many different books by Irodov.

Do you consider the textbooks by Irodov to be as good as the problem book?

Edit: apparently this was already asked before, see https://www.physicsforums.com/threads/soviet-or-russian-physics-and-math-textbooks.502022/
that QFT book looks very interesting. That other thread involved mostly math books and physics problem books, and I am curious about physics textbooks, which is why I started this one. Thanks.
