I'd vote for the first ascent of Annapurna. It was the first ascent of an 8000 meter peak. It remains the only 8000er to be ascended on the first try with no fatalities, even though Annapurna is the most dangerous of the fourteen 8000ers.

In those days they hiked in from India. There were scarcely any maps so finding a route to the base of the mountain was a big part of the expedition.
