SUMMARY

A buffer solution is an aqueous mixture of an acid and its conjugate base that effectively resists changes in pH when strong acids or bases are added. For instance, combining acetic acid with sodium acetate in a specific ratio creates a buffer solution that maintains a stable pH. This property is crucial in chemical reactions where pH stability is required. The discussion emphasizes the importance of buffer solutions in various scientific applications.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of acid-base chemistry
  • Familiarity with pH scale and measurements
  • Knowledge of chemical equilibrium concepts
  • Basic understanding of aqueous solutions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the Henderson-Hasselbalch equation for buffer calculations
  • Explore different types of buffer solutions and their applications
  • Learn about the preparation of buffer solutions using various acids and bases
  • Investigate the role of buffers in biological systems

Yeah like jmm said, its a solution which resists changes in pH. If you add acid to a normal solution, its pH will go down significantly. If you add acid to a buffer solution, its pH won't change. So if you're performing a reaction but you need the pH to stay the same, you could buffer the solution. For example you could add acetic acid and sodium acetate to the solution which when combined at a particular ratio, will act as a buffer.
