SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on calculating the boiling point of water at an altitude of 300 meters using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. The parameters provided include a temperature of 300K, a molecular weight of air at 29g/mol, and a latent heat of evaporation of 540 cal/g at standard temperature and pressure (STP). The equation dp/dt = L/T(v2-v1) is utilized, where dp is calculated as ρgh. Participants emphasize the importance of simplifying the equation by considering the specific volumes of water at different temperatures.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of the Clausius-Clapeyron equation
  • Knowledge of specific volume calculations
  • Familiarity with the ideal gas law
  • Basic principles of thermodynamics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the Clausius-Clapeyron equation in detail
  • Learn about specific volume calculations for water
  • Study the ideal gas law and its applications
  • Explore the relationship between pressure, temperature, and phase changes in thermodynamics
USEFUL FOR

Homework Statement

cal the boiling point of water at 300m. assume its 100 degree centigrade at sea level. given g, R, T=300K, molecular weight of air is 29g/mol and latent heat of evaporation is 540 cal/g at STP

Homework Equations

The equation is

dp/dt= L/T(v2-v1)

where v is the specific volume of water at temp 1 and temp 2

The Attempt at a Solution

i was able to calcutale dp as it ρgh. i m stuck what to do with v2-v1 part

Consider the relative numbers involved with v2 vs. v1. Simplify the equation accordingly.

Then think about the ideal gas law.
