Can a Non-Techie Succeed in Science and Engineering?

Don't want to clog up this forum anymore than I will, but just wanted to say I'm thankful someone has created a forum such as this to address a lot of the elementary questions I feel bog down other areas of interest I visit.

I'm into tinkering and making things, and am educating myself in mechanical engineering, material science, and kinematics, etc.
