Can a rise in sunlight exposure cause magnesium depletion?

    Magnesium Sunlight
AI Thread Summary
Increased sunlight exposure may not directly cause magnesium depletion, but taking high doses of vitamin D, which is processed with magnesium as a cofactor, can lead to magnesium deficiency. Many adults are deficient in both vitamin D and magnesium, often without recognition by healthcare professionals. Adequate magnesium supplementation is crucial when undergoing vitamin D therapy to prevent severe depletion. Excessive vitamin D intake can also result in hypervitaminosis D, leading to toxicity and potential organ damage. Maintaining a healthy balance of vitamins and minerals, alongside appropriate sun exposure, is essential for overall health.

I have recently learned that taking vitamin D supplements can cause a dip in magnesium, because Mg is used as a cofactor to process the vitamin.

Does this apply to a sudden lifestyle change from very little exposure to lots of exposure to sunlight?

(I am asking this as a purely theoretical question about physiology etc, and not as medical advice for myself or others).

That's not quite accurate.

See the article: Magnesium Supplementation in Vitamin D Deficiency (in American Journal of Therapeutics)
https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28471760/
Background: Vitamin D and magnesium (Mg) are some of the most studied topics in medicine with enormous implications for human health and disease. Majority of the adults are deficient in both vitamin D and magnesium but continue to go unrecognized by many health care professionals.

Mg is essential in the metabolism of vitamin D, and taking large doses of vitamin D can induce severe depletion of Mg. Adequate magnesium supplementation should be considered as an important aspect of vitamin D therapy.
Taking large doses of Vitamin D is the important factor, and it can also lead to hypervitaminosis D and subsequent toxicity and organ damage.

Vitamin D toxicity, also called hypervitaminosis D, is a rare but potentially serious condition that occurs when you have excessive amounts of vitamin D in your body.

The objective should be to have the right or healthy balance of vitamins and minerals in the body, and if at all possible, get some sun exposure on the skin.

The study provides critical new insights into the African Humid Period, a time between 14,500 and 5,000 years ago when the Sahara desert was a green savanna, rich in water bodies that facilitated human habitation and the spread of pastoralism. Later aridification turned this region into the world's largest desert. Due to the extreme aridity of the region today, DNA preservation is poor, making this pioneering ancient DNA study all the more significant. Genomic analyses reveal that the...
