Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of managing a class load that includes multivariable calculus, organic chemistry, physics, and a course on computational methods for engineers (Matlab), while also participating in sports year-round. The focus is on balancing academic and athletic commitments.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the class load is manageable, especially if sports do not interfere with studying.
  • Others inquire about the number of hours spent on sports, indicating that it might be a tight schedule but still feasible.
  • One participant notes that most full-time undergraduates typically handle five courses per semester, implying that four courses may be reasonable.
  • There is a mention of labs associated with organic chemistry and physics, which could add to the workload.
  • Concerns are raised about whether the participant is taking a lighter load for an athletic scholarship or if they are condensing a full-year course into a single semester.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that the class load could be manageable, but there are differing opinions on the impact of sports commitments and the specifics of the course structure.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include the lack of specific details on the participant's study habits, the intensity of the courses, and how labs might affect overall workload.

Who May Find This Useful

Students considering similar academic and athletic commitments, as well as those interested in balancing rigorous coursework with extracurricular activities.

Is this a realistic class load considering I also do sports year round?

multivariable calculus
organic chemistry 1
physics 1
computational methods for engineers (matlab)

I would say it's very doable. Do you take any labs?

as for course load that's not bad at all. You just need to make sure you don't let your sports interfere with your studying, if you can do that you'll be fine.

How many hours a week do you do sports? It might get a little tight in there, but you should be fine.

there are labs for organic and physics.

I train between 18-21 hours a week

I don't see a problem. Most full time undergraduates hold down five courses per semester and I only count four on that list. Are you taking a lighter load to maintain an athletic scholarship? Or are you in one case cramming a full year course into a single semester?
