Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the claim that leaving green tea out overnight may render it poisonous. Participants explore the validity of this assertion, considering various factors such as preparation methods and environmental conditions.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants express skepticism about the claim, suggesting that if it were true, green tea packaging would include warnings.
  • Others propose that the presence of sugar and unsanitary conditions could lead to potential issues, though this does not directly support the poisoning claim.
  • One participant notes that steeped tea can become bitter over time, indicating a change in taste rather than toxicity.
  • A question is raised regarding whether chemical reactions occur as a result of leaving tea out, but no definitive answers are provided.
  • Another participant expresses a personal reluctance to drink tea left out overnight, reflecting individual caution rather than a consensus on safety.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the claim of poisoning, with multiple competing views and uncertainties remaining regarding the safety of leaving green tea out overnight.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention factors such as sugar content and kitchen sanitation, but these considerations are not fully explored or quantified, leaving some assumptions unaddressed.

Chemistry news on Phys.org
dunno..naver heard before

I'm sure if that were true then every green tea box would have warning labels all over them, but they don't. That is probably an urban myth.

No, it's not true. Although I suppose if you've got a lot of sugar in and you've got a very unsanitary kitchen then you might be looking for trouble.

If you're talking about tea leaves being steeped in water, then it can become very bitter over the course of several hours.

will there be chemical reactions as a result?

No idea. I wouldn't want to drink any, that's for sure.
