AI Thread Summary
The discussion revolves around a game where participants create cryptic clues that hint at the usernames of members from the Physics Forums. Players attempt to guess the usernames based on the clues provided, often engaging in reasoning and collaborative problem-solving. Examples of clues include "fancy Russian included," which led to the answer "cyrus," and "disenfranchize, without Che inside," which resulted in "franznietzsche." The game encourages creativity and linguistic play, with participants sharing their thought processes and explanations for their guesses. As the game progresses, several clues remain unsolved, prompting players to offer hints or additional clues. The atmosphere is light-hearted, with humor and camaraderie evident among participants as they navigate the challenges of the cryptic clues.

The Hindi word for lion, is typically written sher (without the second 'e') when transliterated to English.

I have never seen it written, I've only heard it, so that was my attempt at transliteration.

Thanks. My source for tiger is now vacillating.

Correct.

And I decree than anyone who's answered 3 questions correctly gets a 3 clue break from answering. You may, of course, post clues.

Since I'm enacting this rule now, George and Neutrino (anyone else?) may not answer 17 through 19. From 20, you may consider you slates clean again.

I know it hurts, George, but you've got to put on your stoic face and move on.

But hey, I made sure you folks didn't have to wait too long to have stuff to work on.

Correct Astro!

Whip It is a popular (albeit weird and possibly disturbing) single by the band Devo.

Ancient History. Just over a quarter of a century ago, the band Devo (I believe this is short for devolution or de-evolution) recorded the song Whip It.

Ah, okay. (This "10 characters" rule really bugs me! )

20. short mountain of tomatoes missing, there exists some backwards mixture

All I can think of is Tom Mattson. Tom having to do with tomatoes with something missing, Mt = mountain, and backwards mixture (?).

That's the correct answer Astronuc, mais le dechiffrement est somewhat lacking, as you've indicated.

Anyone want to try and complete that (you will not be "awarded" a point for doing so)?

With that, Astro, you are out till 24 comes along.

Answers without explanations will not be accepted - no escaping from that. I think Astronuc may have beat you to it - but you could still complete the solution.

24. initially, three of the bases of the basis

25. short engineer: 506 far off?

26. Eerie garden of peril

27. Argus' captain is right by the beast

This next one is easier to solve if you know something about the person, but that's not at all a pre-requisite.

28. No longer man enough, we hear

Well, I thought about it on the way to buy stamps.

Tom Mattson = take 'ato' from Mattson, and that leavs Mtsn, so Tomato is mixed into the mountain (Mt).

che

disenfranchize- disen******i**-che = franz
 Seeing the explanation isn't even helping. What did you do? What are all the stars for? How do you eliminate "disen" based on that clue?

Still not there, Astro - it is a tough one, and a wee bit esoteric, I might add.

Moonbear: remove all the letters from "cheinside" out of "disenfranchize"

Lisa! : 28 is not Echo6Sierra

if you rearrange the word "inside" you get "disen" and an extra "i." And if you remove those letters, plus the letters from "che" from the original word you get "franz"

How about a hint on -

21. old oil town and racing state held in back of left hand

What kind of racing?

and what kind of clue is "in back of left hand" anyway?

  • #139
I was thinking Indy 500 and indianapolis for that astro but I can't think of a name to give me a further clue.

  • #140
24. initially, three of the bases of the basis

Mostly wrong, but is it Rach3 by any chance?(Ribose, Adenine, Cytosine in RNA):-p

Astronuc - don't forget you're on the 3 clue termporary ban. 21 through 23 are off limits for you (of course, you may still solve them - only don't post the answers).

A hint eh? And what's wrong with backhanded clues?

Okay...here's the answer to your first question: equine

equine and oil that would have to be dubai doesn't give me any clues about names but perhaps some of the more established personnel can guess from there.
