Discussion Overview

This thread revolves around a game where participants create cryptic clues that hint at the usernames of members from Physics Forums. The discussion includes attempts to decode these clues, with participants guessing usernames and providing reasoning for their guesses. The scope is primarily conceptual and exploratory, focusing on wordplay and lateral thinking.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • Participants present cryptic clues and attempt to guess the corresponding usernames, such as "fancy Russian included" and "disenfranchize, without Che inside."
  • Some participants express frustration with the difficulty of the clues, suggesting simpler methods like mixing up letters.
  • Multiple interpretations of clues are proposed, with some participants offering reasoning for their guesses, while others challenge or refine these interpretations.
  • Specific usernames are guessed based on the clues, including "franznietzsche," "rocketboy," and "moonbear," with varying degrees of agreement on the correctness of these guesses.
  • Participants engage in playful banter, with some expressing uncertainty about the clues and others providing hints or corrections.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

The discussion contains multiple competing views and interpretations of the clues, with no consensus reached on several of the usernames. Participants frequently challenge each other's reasoning and offer alternative guesses.

Contextual Notes

Some clues may rely on specific knowledge or wordplay that is not universally understood, leading to confusion among participants. Additionally, the clues are designed to be intricate, with every word potentially playing a role in the solution.

Who May Find This Useful

Members interested in word games, cryptic puzzles, or the usernames of Physics Forums members may find this discussion engaging.

Yikes - these things are going faster than I can make them up. Help!

But it's weird that #10 is still unsolved - I thought that would be easy. Maybe it takes more passion, gusto or soul - you know; more spunk, spirit or resolve...or maybe not more, after all.

Before googling, I had never heard of Shere Khan. :blushing:

To me, shere sounds more like the Hindi word for lion, and Hindi for tiger is something like cheeta?

Generally, the Hindi word for Tiger is Baagh.

Not a fan of Kipling, I take it? The Hindi word for lion, is typically written sher (without the second 'e') when transliterated to English.

Okay, I think it's time to up the level a bit. For others that make clues, please number them - that makes keeping accounts easier.

To that end, this is numbered 16.

Number 10 makes me think of Zoobyshoe, and the reference to the Zooby brush shelter, IIRC.

I have never seen it written, I've only heard it, so that was my attempt at transliteration.

Thanks. My source for tiger is now vacillating.

Correct.

And I decree than anyone who's answered 3 questions correctly gets a 3 clue break from answering. You may, of course, post clues.

Since I'm enacting this rule now, George and Neutrino (anyone else?) may not answer 17 through 19. From 20, you may consider you slates clean again.

I know it hurts, George, but you've got to put on your stoic face and move on.

But hey, I made sure you folks didn't have to wait too long to have stuff to work on.

Correct Astro!

Whip It is a popular (albeit weird and possibly disturbing) single by the band Devo.

Ancient History. Just over a quarter of a century ago, the band Devo (I believe this is short for devolution or de-evolution) recorded the song Whip It.

Ah, okay. (This "10 characters" rule really bugs me! )
