Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility of building a cyclotron for a very low cost of $17. Participants explore resources, safety concerns, and the complexities involved in such a project.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant recalls seeing a claim that a cyclotron can be built for $17 and requests links to blueprints or diagrams.
  • Another participant suggests searching for "cheap cyclotron project" on Google, providing a specific reference to a DIY cyclotron article.
  • A different participant shares additional links and emphasizes that building a cyclotron is not an easy task.
  • Concerns are raised about the hazards associated with building a cyclotron, including electrical, physical, and radiation risks, with a note that such threads are often closed due to safety issues.
  • One participant hints at an interesting story related to the hazards but does not elaborate further.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that building a cyclotron is complex and potentially hazardous, but there is no consensus on the feasibility of constructing one for $17 or the safety implications involved.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention various resources and safety concerns, but there are no detailed discussions on the specific technical requirements or assumptions needed for building a cyclotron.

I was at CERN and remember reading somewhere that it is possible to build a cyclotron for the price of 17 US dollars, if anyone has any useful links they could send my way (to blueprints or useful diagrams, it would be much appreciated thank you) :)

Be advised that building your own cyclotron is not an easy task.

Nor an intrinsically safe one. There are many hazards - electrical, physical, radiation - and more. Normally these threads are closed immediately.
