Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the ability to test LaTeX code locally before posting it on the Physics Forums. Participants are exploring methods for previewing LaTeX formulas and attaching images in forum posts.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about testing LaTeX code locally without posting, expressing a desire to learn the code for formulas.
  • Another participant suggests using a specific site for testing LaTeX, providing a link to a MathJax preview tool.
  • There are multiple mentions of difficulties in attaching images, with one participant noting that images need to be hosted online to be displayed in posts.
  • Several participants discuss the "manage attachments" feature, with some expressing confusion about its availability during post creation versus replies or edits.
  • A participant provides an alternative link for building and testing LaTeX code, suggesting another resource for users.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There appears to be some confusion regarding the "manage attachments" feature, with differing experiences reported by participants. However, there is no consensus on the exact behavior of this feature across different posting scenarios.

Contextual Notes

Participants express uncertainty about the visibility of the "manage attachments" box and whether it appears consistently across different types of posts. There is also a lack of clarity on the best methods for testing LaTeX code locally.

Who May Find This Useful

This is my first post. The sticky on Latex is very useful. Looks like I will be learning the code for formulas. Would like to know if you can test the code without posting to the board - how to play with the code and view results locally first.

I am also trying to attach an image. Darn - looks like it needs to be on the web. No way to upload an image?

thanks

A good place to test LaTeX is in this site: https://www.physicsforums.com/mathjax/test/preview.html
Just enter the formula and click with your mouse outside the box. Whatever you typed will appear in LaTeX.

If you make an actual post here and if you just want to see whether you made any mistakes, you can always hit preview. This shows you a preview without actually making the post.

An image on the web can be posted by enclosing the webpage by [ IMG ] and [ /IMG ] tags (without the spaces).

For example, type

[IΜG]http://weknowmemes.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/ancient-aliens-it-was-aliens.jpg[/IΜG]

to show a picture.

If your picture is not on the web you can upload it. Whenever you make a post, check the "manage attachments" box beneath your post.
One can also upload the picture on the internet using sites like http://imageshack.us/

I think the manage attachments box appears in the Additional Options box. I did not see an Additional Options box when I posted this thread...

Only seems to appear when you reply or edit your post. Correct?

No, the box should appear every time.

You can build and test your latex code here http://www.codecogs.com/latex/eqneditor.php
