Chadwick's discovery of the neutron - radiation

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Chadwick's discovery of the neutron clarified the nature of radiation produced when alpha particles collide with Beryllium, leading to the release of protons from Paraffin wax. Initially mistaken for gamma radiation, this neutron discovery resolved issues related to the conservation of energy and momentum that gamma radiation could not address. The neutron's existence provided a more accurate understanding of atomic structure and interactions.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of alpha particle interactions
  • Knowledge of Beryllium's role in radiation experiments
  • Familiarity with conservation laws in physics
  • Basic principles of nuclear physics
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the role of neutrons in atomic structure
  • Explore the differences between gamma radiation and neutron radiation
  • Study conservation of energy and momentum in nuclear reactions
  • Investigate historical experiments leading to the discovery of the neutron
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching nuclear physics concepts, and anyone interested in the historical context of atomic discoveries.

Oh hello. I'm quite uncertain about one of the reasons for the discovery of the neutron. Apparently, the neutron is supposed to be the radiation released by alpha particles hitting Beryllium. When the radiation hits Paraffin wax, the paraffin wax releases protons. At first, people thought that this radiation was a special kind of gamma radiation. This, however, broke the conservation of energy.

My question is - how does a neutron solve the conservation of energy and momentum problems that exist with gamma radiation?

PS High school Student here, just so you are aware of your audience but I'll try my best.

I wonder if it's possible to move this thread to the Atomic one? It may fit a little bit better there now I think of it.

Thanks
