Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the confusion regarding changing a Skype password and whether it also affects the Microsoft account password, given that Microsoft owns Skype. Participants explore the relationship between the two accounts and the implications of changing passwords.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about whether changing the password through the Skype settings means changing the Microsoft password or the Skype password.
  • Another participant notes that Microsoft owns Skype and suggests that the passwords might be related, drawing a parallel to how Google manages passwords for its services.
  • A different participant clarifies that their Skype and Microsoft accounts have different passwords, indicating that they are not the same.
  • One participant challenges the notion that having different passwords means having different accounts, suggesting that it may be a second Microsoft account with a different identity.
  • A later reply asserts that changing the password would indeed change the Microsoft account password, providing a link for further clarification.
  • Another participant acknowledges the correction regarding account identities and expresses gratitude for the clarification, while also questioning the accuracy of an external source that claims Microsoft and Skype passwords are not the same.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on whether the passwords are the same or different, as there are competing views regarding the relationship between Skype and Microsoft accounts.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved assumptions regarding the nature of account identities and the implications of changing passwords, as well as the reliability of external sources referenced in the discussion.

Wishing to change my Skype password (because I forgot to record or save it and hence forgot it and can't retrieve it, as the password is not visible anywhere), I let my computer sign in to Skype automatically, then
>Settings>Profile>Change Password
Whereupon I get a screen that looks like this
skype microsoft.png

This is confusing: am I re-setting my Microsoft password, or my Skype password, by filling in this page?
Thanks for the help.

Microsoft owns Skype. Skype is part of Microsoft services. I don't know if the passwords are related or identical. I don't use Skype, but this sounds similar to the way Google owns Youtube and they have the same password. So changing one also changes the other.

Thanks, FactChecker. But I do know that the passwords for Skype and for Microsoft are different passwords. (I have a second Skype account, with a different password to my Microsoft account.) So, it is still not clear to me: when I fill in the above, what password am I changing?

That is not accurate. You have a a second Microsoft account, with a different identity (probably a different email address), on which Skype is also enabled.

You would be changing the password to your Microsoft account.

Super, bpuk. "You would be changing the password to your Microsoft account." Direct, clear answer.

"You have a second Microsoft account, with a different identity (probably a different email address), on which Skype is also enabled." Thank you for that correction. You are correct, it is a different email address.

Thanks also for the link. I see that the link is from this year (the exact date does not seem to be noted), so I presume that the 23 Nov 2023 answer from this source
https://www.easeus.com/key-finder/find-skype-password.html
which states
"the Microsoft and Skype passwords are not the same".
is either outdated or simply wrong.

So, thanks again to both you, pbuk, and FactChecker. Case closed.
