SUMMARY

A basic first-year university physics course typically covers fundamental topics such as classical mechanics, thermodynamics, electromagnetism, and waves. Students should expect to engage with detailed syllabi and reading materials provided by individual instructors, which offer a clearer picture of the course structure. Accessing departmental websites can yield valuable resources that outline specific topics and expectations for the course.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of classical mechanics principles
  • Familiarity with basic thermodynamic concepts
  • Knowledge of electromagnetism fundamentals
  • Ability to analyze wave phenomena
NEXT STEPS
  • Research classical mechanics topics in introductory physics textbooks
  • Explore thermodynamics principles through online courses
  • Study electromagnetism using resources like "University Physics" by Young and Freedman
  • Investigate wave mechanics and their applications in physics
USEFUL FOR

First-year university students, physics majors, educators seeking curriculum insights, and anyone interested in foundational physics topics.

what sort of topics should i be expecting in a basic first year uni physics course?

the university websites are too general and don't usually give too much detail when desribing the topics covered

The official course descriptions are indeed often vague and general. However, many instructors post more detailed syllabi and reading schedules online. Look for Web sites (or sections of university sites) run by individual departments and you should be able to find materials posted by instructors.
