Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the career prospects of civil versus mechanical engineering, with a particular focus on the environmental aspects of civil engineering and renewable energy. Participants explore the compatibility of interests in machinery and renewable energy within these fields.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in both civil and mechanical engineering, highlighting a fascination with renewable energy and environmental aspects of civil engineering, while also showing a preference for machinery and cars.
  • Another participant suggests that a mechanical engineering background can lead to opportunities in renewable energy.
  • A later reply indicates that mechanical engineering may be a better fit for the original poster, especially if they are inclined towards thermodynamics.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on which engineering discipline is better suited for the original poster, and multiple perspectives on career prospects and interests remain present.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions regarding the specific career prospects in both fields and how the renewable energy aspect is integrated into mechanical engineering. The discussion reflects personal interests and assumptions about the fields without definitive conclusions.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals considering a career in engineering, particularly those interested in civil or mechanical engineering and renewable energy applications.

Im interested in both civil and mechanical engineering but am still unsure on which one is best suited to me. I am am very interested in the Environmental side of Civil engineering as renewable energy fascinates me. However, I am more interested in machinery and cars than I am about bridges and roads. I would like to know which of the two has better career prospects and whether the renewable energy aspect of civil engineering is also included in mechanical engineering and whether i could still pursue this field upon finishing my mechanical degree.

You can do renewable energy with a mechanical engineering background.

Definitely. I'm not an engineer but ME seems a better fit for you, OP, especially if you lean towards thermodynamics in your studies.
