The field is now called "Low Energy Nuclear Reactions", LENR.

Transmutations of element nuclei do occur during the process, but there is no significant energy generated. It will not break the economy, but it will reveal useful science in time.

It is difficult to tell what is happening with that line of research at the moment. Alternative theories of the structure of an element's nucleus are being investigated.
